Accommodations

Zaytuna is pleased to announce it will be providing housing for its Summer 2008 students, with the cost for housing included in the total package. The Arabic Intensive Housing is a cost-efficient convenience that is intended to reduce student stress load upon arrival, to create a communal feeling among program students, and to facilitate maximum acquisition of Arabic language skills. NOTE: For the above reasons, the Zaytuna Arabic Intensive instructors and administrative staff strongly encourage all students, including those living in the local Bay Area, to take advantage of the summer housing facilities arranged by the program.

The Berkeley Westminster House

Housing for Summer 2008 will be located at the Westminster House, located at 2315 College Avenue in Berkeley, California, literally steps away from the U.C. Berkeley campus. Students live in deluxe single-gender suites with one, two, or three roommates. Each suite comes furnished with the following amenities: one bed and desk per person, private bathroom with shower, carpeted floors, high-speed wireless access, portable refrigerator, and microwave. Common areas are also comfortably-furnished and include an elegantly-styled library, quiet study room, laundry facility, open-sky courtyard, and an expansive roof deck with beautiful views of the San Francisco Bay and Berkeley hills.

Housing rates vary according to number of roommates (the more roommates, the less expensive the rate). All rates cover lodging in the Westminster House for the duration of the program (June 20 through August 17, 2008), as well as provision of fresh linens (two sheets, two towels, one bedspread, one blanket, one pillow, and one pillow case) and a weekly linen replacement service.

All rooms are not the same size (the more occupants, the larger the room). Applicants rank their housing preferences on the housing section of the Application for Admission.  ***PLEASE NOTE: There are limited rooms available, and room preferences are considered on a first-come, first-serve basis (i.e. rooms are assigned as soon as we receive your completed application and application fee).

Arrival & Orientation Session

Housing for the Summer Arabic Intensive officially opens on Friday, June 20, 2008. The mandatory Orientation Session is scheduled for Sunday, June 22. It is crucial that students be present for Orientation. Hence we require that students arrive no later than Saturday, June 21 in order to settle into their accommodations calmly and prepare for the Sunday orientation followed by the first day of classes on Monday morning, June 23. Orientation is to include a formal welcome, an introduction to the program and accommodations, a discussion of student policies, and information about student life in Berkeley.

Policy on Late Arrivals / Early Departures

The Zaytuna Summer Arabic Intensive program requires 100 percent attendance from the first to the last day of classes. Though we recognize that emergency circumstances may arise, due to the intensive nature of the program late arrival is strongly discouraged.

Similarly, the Zaytuna Arabic Intensive faculty and staff understand that schedules at students' home universities or places of employment may require early departure. In such circumstances, please note this on your application in order to allow us to make advance preparations. Please note, however, that priority may be given to students who are able to stay for the entire term.
